33 year old driver drowns in Densu River

A 33-year-old man has drowned in the New Juaben South Municipality stretch of the Densu River.

The body of the deceased identified as Christopher Ahadzi reported to be a driver was retrieved on Thursday April 2,2020 by local divers under the supervision of personnel from Ghana Police Service,and National Disaster Management Organization(NADMO).

His body has since been deposited at the mortuary Koforidua.

The Assembly Member for Densuano Electoral area, Benjamin Appiah Afari asserted that the deceased came to swim in that stretch of the river which records high patronage.

Mercy Ofori, a Zonal Director of NADMOe sadly revealed that five drowning incidents have been recorded in the area just this year.

According to her residents have been advised to desist from swimming if they lack swimming prowess.

Globally, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional injury death, accounting for 7% of all injury-related deaths.

According to the World Health Organization, in 2016, an estimated 320 000 people died from drowning, making drowning a major public health problem worldwide.

In 2015, injuries accounted for over 9% of total global mortality.

The global burden and death from drowning is found in all economies and regions, however, low- and middle-income countries account for over 90% of unintentional drowning deaths; over half of the world’s drowning occurs in the Western Pacific Region and South-East Asia Region.

Drowning death rates are highest in the African Region, and are 15-20 times higher than those seen in Germany or the United Kingdom, respectively.
