Unisa postpones graduations after Nehawu members disrupt ceremony

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has suspended further graduations following disruptions allegedly by protesting National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union (Nehawu) members at a ceremony on Tuesday.

“University management is currently in conversation with Nehawu about the issues in dispute that led to the disruption, as well as the rules of engagement when employees exercise their right to protest,” Unisa spokesperson Victor Dlamini said in a statement.

Dlamini said the university would make alternative arrangements for the graduates who had been inconvenienced by the disruption.

He said the details of the arrangements would be communicated directly to the affected graduates in due time.

Graduation ceremonies scheduled for Wednesday at 18:00 and for Thursday at 10:00 and 18:00 have been postponed until further notice.

“The university will also communicate more information about the outstanding graduation ceremonies in due course,” Dlamini said.
