Demolish Aburi hills structures – Parliamentary road committee demands

The Roads and Transport Committee of Parliament is calling for the urgent demolishing of buildings along the Aburi hills as a solution to recurring landslides.

This development is as a result of a landslide which induced flooding, displacing about 559 residents after four hours of rain on Monday.

The affected victims were temporarily sheltered.

Speaking on Accra based Starr FM, the chairman of the committee, Samuel Ayeh-Paye said the solution to the problem is to stop human activities on top of the hills.

He added that the landslides was due to the pressure being mounted on the hill by buildings.

Mr Ayeh-Paye, who is the MP for Ayensuano Constituency, in the Eastern Region, said the situation is a waiting national disaster and urged various stakeholders including the National Security, local authorities, central government, chiefs and all Ghanaians to be concerned.

Mr. Ayeh-Paye also added that building retaining walls will not help if the structures on the hills are not demolished.

Similarly, the Director of Operations for NADMO, Emmanuel Adu Ansah also attributed the landslide to a bad fence wall of a house located on the hills.
