SC fines Barker-Vormawor 10k

The Supreme Court has dismissed the application filed by #fixthecountry convener, Oliver Barker-Vormawor on behalf of his client, Benjamin Darko against the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The court has also fined the convener an amount of GHS10,000 on Tuesday, 12 July 2022.

Mr Barker-Vormawor who was Counsel for the applicant; Benjamin Dark of Democracy Hub and Democratic Accountability Lab, was seeking to commit the GRA and its Commissioner-General for contempt for going ahead to implement the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-levy) despite a suit challenging the implementation.

According to the Supreme Court, “the applicant has no locus and is not clothed by law to file the instant application to commit the Commissioner-General of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for contempt.”

It continued that: “The application in itself is defective, it does not measure up to the standard. It is frivolous and vexatious. We award cost of GHS10,000 to be paid personally by counsel.”

The President of the 7-member panel of the court, Justice Nene Amegatcher further advised the convener to do his homework  before coming to the Supreme Court.

“You are coming to the highest court of the land, you must learn how to title your case appropriately, you must do your homework before coming to the Supreme Court”, Justice Amegatcher said.
