Spain-based Ghanaian Ben Yankson has made public his stowaway journey from Ghana to Europe in a cabin of a ship leaving the Tema port.
In a chat on SVTV Africa, Ben indicated that a friend informed him of a connection to Spain on a ship. According to Ben, he paid GHs4000 for his space in the cabin.
“The port securities are aware of the connections, so they will give you a boarding card and allow you to go onto the ship. However, you cannot pass through the port. We are about five migrants on the journey,” he told DJ Nyaami.
Mr Yankson disclosed that the ship stopped over in several countries, and they were at liberty to choose where to disembark.
“They told us the ship will stop at Las Palmas, Belgium, UK. So you have to decide and pay the fee based on your destination unless they can’t get you off at a port for some reason,” he said.
Moreover, Ben revealed that they were arrested in Las Palmas and transported him to Madrid for examination because the authorities were unsure of his age.
“I had an x-ray scan which proved that I was between 17 and 18 years, but the judge did not make a decision based on the scan. They could not tell if I was underage or grown-up. Eventually, an association took care of my education and all, till I got my documents,” he added.
