Morning erection: Here is what it means to your health

Morning wood is something that most healthy guys experience throughout their lives. Speak with your doctor if you aren’t experiencing your typical morning erections because this could indicate a more serious issue.

According to Medicalnewstoday, morning wood, also known as nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT), is a sure sign that the private organ is healthy. No matter your age, getting nocturnal erections is acceptable. It’s evidence that your nervous and vascular systems are functioning normally.
The neurological system and endocrine system—the glands that secrete hormones into our bodies—have complicated interactions that affect the penile blood vessels, which leads to penile erections.

In order for blood to enter the private organ, a message from the brain sends chemical signals to the nerves that feed the penile blood arteries. An erection occurs as a result of the blood becoming stuck in the private organ’ muscles, which causes it to enlarge.

Several hormones, including testosterone, affect how the brain reacts (the main male hormone).

In an uncontrolled reflex action that resides in the spinal cord, the same mechanism can take place without the brain’s involvement. This explains why you can have an erection even when you’re not intimately active and why those with spinal cord damage can still have them.

According to Medicalnewstoday, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep is when nighttime penile erections happen (the phase during which we dream). They take place when specific brain regions are active. This includes brain regions in charge of activating parasympathetic nerves (also known as “rest and digest” nerves), repressing sympathetic nerves (often known as “flight and fight” nerves), and calming serotonin-producing regions (the mood hormone).
