FIFA, together with the International Board, the organisation in charge of the rules of football, could make some changes to the current reglamentations to try and avoid goalkeepers doing things to slow down penalties and/or distracting the taker psychologically during shootouts.
According to ‘The Sun’, this iniciative comes after Argentina goalkeeper Emi Martinez’ controversial acts at the Qatar World Cup 2022.
For example, in the final against France, the Aston Villa goalkeeper resorted to different ways to make his opponents lose concentration and get them nervous when taking their penalty. Without needing to go into any details, Aurelien Tchouameni missed his strike.
Because of what happened, which certainly got everyone talking, FIFA are thought to be considering taking measures to prevent goalkeepers having contact with the opposition player with the aim of self gain.
Only time will tell what will happen in the next few months, but what is for sure is that both organisations have started to talk about trying to find a short-term solution.
