Six men get collective 235 years in prison for robbing several betting operators

Six men have been handed hefty sentences for a spate of business robberies at betting operators in KwaZulu-Natal in 2019.

They range in age from 23 to 32 years old.

Sphamandla Njini Zuma, 25; Thabiso Gumede, 32; Mvuyiso Dondi, 30; Maswenkosi Mazwe, 27; Sifiso Mhlongo, 23; and Serry Myboy Ngcobo, 23, were sentenced in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), the six men were found guilty of robbing several betting operators between March and September 2019.

The operators included:

– Hollywoodbets in Chatsworth;

– Marshalls World of Sport in Pinetown and Amanzimtoti;

– Playa Bets in Umzinto;

– TAB in Pietermaritzburg and KwaDukuza; and

– Gold Circle in Umlazi

NPA spokesperson Natasha Kara said the robbers made off with approximately R600 000 before they were caught.

“They were traced after a facial recognition analysis was done on the CCTV footage from the stores,” Kara said.

“In court, Regional Court prosecutor Kuveshni Pillay led the testimonies of the complainants, as well as the findings of the identity parades. The complainants testified on the trauma they experienced during the robberies. Pillay also led the evidence of a facial recognition expert.”

They will serve between 15 and 70 years in jail, with some sentences running concurrently.
