Ayorkor-Boctwey Has Failed US! – Sowutuom-Anyaa constituents cry out over bad roads

PRESENT deplorable state of the major roads in the various electoral areas within the Anyaa-Sowutoum Constituency in the Ga Central Municipality in the Accra have angered the residents

Micing no words, the agrieved residents fired salvo at their Member of Parliament (MP), Mrs. Shirley Ayorkor-Boctwey for what they described as failure to lobby for the construction of the roads and other social amenities in the constituency.

According to the residents, Mrs Ayorkor-Boctwey who doubles as the Minister for Foreign Affairs has completely failed them for all the years she represents them in Parliament and expressed disappointment in her for not using her influence to put their roads in good shape.

The residents lamented that the present stated of Kwashie-Bu road linking to Hong Kong is now death trap, saying situation has also put the travelling public in a difficulty as residents spoken to explained that commercial vehicles no longer plied that route.

They pointed out that most of the roads had developed deep potholes due to the lack of a proper drainage system.

However the aggrieved eesidents have threatened to demonstrate against the ruling New Patrotic Party (NPP) government over the deplorable state of their roads.

They pointed out that, the deplorable state of the roads, was a sordid experience which “most commuters have to endure on daily basis”.

According to them, they had on countless occasions appealed to the authorities of Highways, the MP, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ga Central Municipal Assembly and the Minister of Roads and Transport to address the issue but all to no avail.

“We’ve been talking about it for some time now but nothing concrete has happened. I am optimistic that your (referring to this reporter) visit to do this story will open a whole new chapter and bring the kind of results we are all looking for,” the residents said.

They noted that “car owners and drivers have been visiting mechanic shops everyday due to the deplorable state of the roads”.

They asserted that most of the linked roads in the community were in deplorable conditions, making it uncomfortable for commuters, drivers and residents.

They complained that, most of the roads had developed deep potholes due to the lack of a proper drainage system in the community.

According to them, since there were no gutters in the vicinity, erosion had worsened the already bad state of the roads.

Today was told that the opinion leaders in Kwashiebu in their effort to salvage the situation, after several calls on the authorities failed to yield results, mobilised some resources from the residents to construct gutters, which were not enough to address the poor drainage system in the area.

The owners of the schools in Kwashiebu enclave area expressed worry over the development and called on the government to do something as soon as possible to save the situation.

Some other challenges within the municipality include poor road network, inadequate drains on the sides of the roads and poor sanitary conditions.

Today also visited an area around Nyamekye, right behind the Kata International Hostel also within the Ga Central Municipality, with equally bad roads.

Residents complained bitterly that the bad nature of the roads had rendered their area “as dead as a cemetery”.

They told Today that most of the roads in the vicinity served as the fastest route for drivers in case of heavy traffic on the N1 highway.

“The roads here are very close to the N1 highway, so it is very unfortunate to have such bad roads close to an ultra-modern highway,” they stated.

They added that together with some residents, funds had been mobilised periodically to buy broken-down concrete to level the heavily eroded road, but the project became too huge to maintain.
