Argentina’s Enzo Fernández apologised over ‘racist chant’ targeting France Players

Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernández has issued an apology for the racist chants he and his teammates used for the France football team players. Fernandez acknowledged the hurtful nature of their actions and expressed remorse for the offensive behaviour.

The Argentina national team’s celebrations after winning the Copa América included a partially live-streamed rendition of a racist chant from the 2022 World Cup, aimed at the France national team’s players.

That video, posted by Chelsea’s own Enzo Fernández, has earned them fairly universal condemnation, just as it should — including a terse and strongly worded response from Wesley Fofana.

Chelsea are also said to be looking into this incident, “treating the matter seriously” and expected to “handle it accordingly”.

It’s not yet clear what that might entail as far as Enzo’s concerned, but for now, the 23-year-old has posted an apology on Instagram. That’s a start, I suppose, even if it was delivered in Comic Sans and only in a story, was clearly managed a bit through PR (at least to translate), and includes a fairly weird causal implication to the “euphoria” of the moment.

“I want to apologise sincerely for a video posted on my Instagram channel during the national team celebrations.

“The song includes highly offensive language and there is absolutely no excuse for these words.

“I stand against discrimination in all forms and apologise for getting caught up in the euphoria of our Copa America celebrations.

“That video, that moment, those words, do not reflect my beliefs or my character.

“I am truly sorry.”
