Galamsey Fight:Churches Must Take the Lead -Dr Godfred Andoh

Dr. Godfred Andoh, convener of the Transformation Conference, has issued a clarion call to Christians in Ghana to join the fight against galamsey, emphasizing the urgent need to preserve the country’s natural resources.

Speaking at the 2024 edition of the conference, which kicked off on September 25, Dr. Andoh highlighted the devastating impact of illegal mining on Ghana’s water bodies and fertile lands.

“The church must stand tall in the fight against the destruction of our environment,” Dr. Andoh stressed, noting that Christians, who make up 72% of Ghana’s population, have a critical role to play in driving positive transformation.

He lamented that, despite their numerical strength, Christians have often been indifferent or even hostile to conservation efforts.

Dr. Andoh’s appeal echoes the sentiments of many concerned citizens who recognize the catastrophic consequences of galamsey on Ghana’s ecosystem. The wanton destruction of forests, water bodies, and arable lands has severe repercussions on biodiversity, human health, and the economy.

The Impact of Galamsey

– Destruction of water bodies and fertile lands
– Loss of biodiversity and ecosystem disruption
– Adverse effects on human health
– Economic consequences, including loss of revenue and livelihoods

He indicated that,It is imperative that Christians and other stakeholders join forces to combat this menace.

Dr. Andoh aptly put it, “Today, our water bodies have been destroyed and many lands made useless as a result of galamsey… We must take action to protect God’s creation”.

He reiterated that working together, Ghanaians can mitigate the effects of galamsey and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
