2024 Elections: Unaudited Voter Register May Breed Election Violence- Bernard Oduro Takyi warns

Renowned Chartered Economist, Bernard Oduro Takyi, has criticized Electoral Commission Chair, Jean Mensa, for her stubborn stance on an independent audit of the voter register.

He warns that her actions could lead to violence in the 2024 elections if the register isn’t audited.

In an interview on TV XYZ morning show dubbed “Dwaboase”, Mr Takyi emphasized that although the Electoral Commission is independent, it’s not autonomous, and Jane Mensa must take necessary steps to restore public trust in the commission, rather than serving the interests of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The Electoral Commission’s independence is guaranteed by Ghana’s 1992 constitution, ensuring it operates without external control or direction.

However, Takyi’s statement highlights concerns about potential biases and the need for transparency.

He indicated that ,the Electoral Commission’s refusal to conduct an independent audit raises concerns about potential manipulation, adding that Unaudited voter registers could lead to disputes and violence during the 2024 elections.

“The commission’s independence is compromised if it’s perceived as serving partisan interests.”

Takyi’s call for action echoes growing public concerns about the Electoral Commission’s credibility. With Ghana’s electoral history marked by tensions and disputes, ensuring the integrity of the voter register is crucial for peaceful and fair elections.
