Challenging Heights Demands Commission of Inquiry into Obuasi Military Clash

A human rights organization, Challenging Heights, has condemned the recent military clashes with the Obuasi community, resulting in the loss of eight lives and several injuries. The organization has called for a commission of inquiry into the incident, citing concerns about transparency and accountability.

In a statement, Challenging Heights expressed disappointment over the swift labeling of the victims as “thugs” or “illegal miners” without a thorough investigation.

The organization emphasized the need to listen to the perspectives of the local people, whose human and environmental rights are often neglected in mining communities.

Challenging Heights noted that mining activities have become a national security threat, with frequent clashes between mining companies and local communities. The organization stressed that while mining companies have the legal right to operate, they must also respect the rights of local people and the environment.

The organization welcomed the government’s call for AngloGold Ashanti to cover the medical bills of the injured and the burial costs of the deceased. However, Challenging Heights argued that a commission of inquiry is necessary to ensure a transparent and comprehensive investigation into the clashes.

According to Emmanuel Annobil, Advocacy Officer at Challenging Heights, “Asking one security agency to probe into the actions of another security agency may not engender confidence in the report.” Annobil emphasized that a commission of inquiry would provide a more open and transparent investigation, addressing all aspects of the incident.

Challenging Heights has been working in Ghana for over 20 years, advocating for human and environmental rights. The organization’s call for a commission of inquiry highlights the need for accountability and transparency in the investigation into the Obuasi military clash.
