The Nkoranza Fire Command has emerged victorious in a quiz competition organized by the Bono East Regional Fire Command. The event, which featured four fire stations, Techiman Metro, Kintampo, Nkoranza, and the Bono East Regional Command was held in preparation for the celebration of this year’s International Firefighters’ Day.
International Firefighters’ Day (IFFD) is observed on May 4 every year, and it honors the bravery, sacrifice, and service of firefighters around the world. The event was established in 1999 after a tragic accident in the United States, which claimed the lives of five firefighters who died in the line of duty.
These fallen heroes were: Firefighter John M. Vance, Firefighter Larry M. Green, Firefighter Jeffrey M. Pappas, Firefighter William M. Silva, and Firefighter Robert D. Sanders
To remember these fallen heroes and show appreciation for the dedicated men and women who risk their lives to protect communities, IFFD serves as a day of reflection, respect, and recognition.
The day is marked by fire departments around the world, where ceremonies, events, and educational programs are held to highlight the important work done by firefighters, as well as the physical and emotional challenges they face. The Ghana National Fire Service, along with fire services globally, takes part in activities that not only recognize the service of firefighters but also promote ongoing training, safety measures, and camaraderie within the fire service community.
The quiz competition saw fierce rivalry among the four teams across three rounds. Nkoranza Fire Command secured the top spot with a total of 61 points, earning 25 points in the first round, 24 in the second, and 12 in the third. The Bono East Regional Command (RHQ) followed closely in second place with 59 points, scoring 28 in the first round, 21 in the second, and 10 in the third. Kintampo Fire Command claimed third place with 58 points, tallying 19 points in the first round, 27 in the second, and 12 in the third. Techiman Metro Fire Command finished fourth with 53 points, accumulating 21 points in the first round, 24 in the second, and 8 in the third.
The Nkoranza team was awarded a trophy and essential firefighting equipment, including a fire helmet, protective clothing, gloves, boots, a breathing apparatus, and many other items.
The Bono East Regional Fire Commander, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Naomi Adubea Ofori Sarpong, commended all participants for their dedication and effort in making the quiz a success. She used the opportunity to offer words of encouragement to the Techiman Metro team, urging them not to be discouraged by the outcome.
According to her, the questions used during the quiz competition were taken from the same books used for their promotional exams, and therefore urged them to keep reading their books and notes.
“You have all done well, and I appreciate your commitment in making this quiz competition a success. To our winners from Nkoranza, I say congratulations. To the rest of our competitors, I encourage you not to let the results weigh you down. Keep reading your books and notes, as these same materials will form the basis of your upcoming promotional exams,” she said.
The quiz forms part of a series of activities leading up to the regional climax of International Firefighters’ Day, which will be celebrated on Monday, May 5, 2025. The event aims to honor the commitment and bravery of firefighters while promoting education and professional development within the Ghana National Fire Service.
