The Techiman South Municipal Director of Education, Pastor Isaac Amankwa, has assured the full support of his Directorate to the newly inaugurated District Implementation Committee for the Ghana Smart SDG Cities Program.
His pledge follows the inauguration of a 28-member committee by the Bono East Regional Minister, Hon. Francis Owusu Antwi, on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, at the Regional Coordinating Council Conference Hall in Techiman.
The Ghana Smart SDG Cities Program, an initiative led by the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development with support from the Norwegian government and UN-Habitat, seeks to promote smart, inclusive, and sustainable urban development in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 11, Sustainable Cities and Communities.
In an exclusive interview, Pastor Isaac Amankwa explained the importance of collaboration between the Education Directorate in the District Implementation Committee in ensuring the program’s success.
“The Bono East Regional Minister recently inaugurated the District Implementation Committee for the Ghana Smart SDC City Program at the Regional Coordinating Council.
“As an Education Directorate, we have a stake in ensuring the success of this program, as part of the initiative, the committee will support schools in improving sanitation conditions in our environment.” He said.
He revealed that the District Implementation Committee, working through the Municipal Assembly, will soon begin distributing color-coded waste bins to schools across the municipality. This, he explained, will promote proper waste disposal, segregation, and recycling—skills that are critical to nurturing environmentally conscious citizens.
“The District Implementation Committee, through the Municipal Assembly, will provide color-coded dustbins to promote proper waste disposal in schools. This presents an opportunity for us, as the Education Directorate, to educate our learners on waste separation and recycling.” He stated
Pastor Isaac Amakwa further urged all teachers in the municipality to actively support the work of the Committee. “I encourage every teacher to embrace this initiative and support the Ghana Smart SDG Cities Program. Together, we can transform our communities and build a cleaner, greener Techiman.”
