Amendment of assets declaration law will help reduce corruption – Majority Leader

Parliament, through the amendment of the conduct of public officers law, seeks to enforce the assets declaration law binding public officials to publicly declare assets and liabilities before and after terms in public office.

The Auditor-General, Daniel Yao Domelevo, in compliance with the provisions of Article 286 of the Constitution and Public Office Holders (Declaration of Assets and Disqualification) Act, 1998, (Act 550), directed the Ghana Audit Service and other firms auditing on his behalf to ensure public office holders declare their assets and liabilities early this year.

Speaking to Adom News, Majority Leader in Parliament, Mr Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, said the amendment of the bill aimed at enforcing the assets and liabilities declaration law will help reduce corruption among public officials.

“Conduct of public officers bill will help in the fight against corruption, the law will require public office holders make their assets public so Ghanaians can have access and determine the financial standing of officials at any given time. So if assets of public officers increase dramatically, questions can be asked,” he said.
