Gun-wielding men on Friday besieged the Northern Regional office of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and destroyed properties belonging to the party.
The incident occurred minutes before the start of an executive meeting, Regional Secretary, Mohammed Abdul-Salam said in an interview.
Abdul-Salam said the attackers bounced into the office, started ransacking and destroying items amid firing of gunshots.
“When I was in the office some four gentlemen entered office; without uttering a word they went searching my things, my cabinet, drawers. I started asking what they were in the office for and one of them raised a gun, the General Secretary narrated.
“When one of them outside realized my presence at the office, he instructed the guys inside to vandalise the glass door of the office, then went outside and threw stones through the back glass of the office and then fired three warning shots, hopped on their motorbikes and sped off,” he further stated.
Though police in the Northern Region have named the gang as ‘Aluta Boys’, Abdul-Salam insists they are not affiliated to the party as widely reported.
Police in the Northern Region has since commenced investigations into the matter.
“We are told that there is a group that is involved in criminal and nefarious activities; we don’t know whether or not they are party boys; For now we have deployed our men to patrol the area,” Regional Crime Officer, Superintendent Otuo Acheampong said in an interview.
