Chaos at Amasaman market; two arrested

Two persons have been arrested by the Amasaman Divisional Police after violence broke out at a temporary market in the area.

Traders in the market reacted to the demolishing of their structures by a taskforce presumed to be from the Municipal Assembly.

According to them, this is the fourth time their structures have been demolished when the space was allocated to them by the Municipal Chief Executive.

A trader speaking to Starr News Daniel Nii Lartey said “the MCE said he will get a place for all of us who sell at the roadside and so the place was raided, so we are now selling behind the road which was given to us per the agreement. They came to destroy our structures three times, and the fourth one took place just yesterday.”

Another trader who recounted the incidence said “I was here when the whole thing happened at 4:30 am, six police cars were brought here with dogs and they said we should not sell. They threw away and kicked all our produce.”

The MCE for the area Clement Wilkinson denied allegations that he sanctioned the exercise.

He said “this land belongs to the ministry of agric. It doesn’t belong to the assembly, it doesn’t belong to me. And the agric ministry says we will not allow you people to do this on our land. So you can go to the divisional commander and ask him, they’ll produce the agric. ministry’s task force.”

No casualties have been recorded as calm has been restored by the police.
