A 38-year-old Bloemfontein woman who allegedly abducted a two-month-old baby while his mom was fetching medication at a clinic, has been arrested after the child was found on Tuesday.
According to police, their investigation led them to a house in Phase 6, in the Bloemspruit area in Mangaung, where they found the baby unharmed.
Baby Bokang was abducted on Thursday after his 18-year-old mother, Kgomotso King, was told by the woman that babies were not allowed inside the clinic.
King then allegedly asked the unknown woman to hold her baby while she went inside, and that was the last time she saw Bokang that day.
“It is alleged that the woman was initially pregnant, and she somehow lost the baby,” police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele said.
“She was scared to inform the husband who works out of town, then contemplated to adopt a baby, but was told that the process is long,” added Makhele.
On the day that Bokang was abducted, the 38-year-old went to the clinic for an appointment. That’s where she saw King and her baby and befriended her.
“The baby was referred to a local hospital for a check-up and thereafter reunited with the mother,” said Makhele.
The accused was expected to appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Thursday on a charge of abduction.
