Free WiFi for schools

Government is to provide free WiFi (Internet) service in all tertiary and secondary schools across the country to aid teaching and learning.

It is in fulfilment of the campaign pledge of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration to pursue free WiFi for certain categories of educational institutions.

“I’m happy to inform you that we have moved very quickly on this and by the grace of God, we will start a first rollout of the free WiFi amongst about one university and about three senior high schools or so,” Vice-President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia said during an International Youth Day celebration at Mampong-Akwapim in the Eastern Region yesterday.

The Vice-President said that they are instituting the programme such that within the next two years, the programme would have covered all tertiary institutions and senior high schools in the country.

“We do this not because we want to provide free WiFi, but it is so fundamental; most of the information we need today is on the Internet and so we want to make sure that students and the youth have access to that information … such measures are being put in place with the ultimate aim of transforming the economy,” he emphasized.

He charged the youth to have a positive mindset as they strive for the top. “Let us not underestimate our abilities; you can reach for the skies. This is why I keep saying that we should never say this is impossible. It has not yet been made possible and you may be the one to make it possible. Let us not think about impossibilities. Anything is possible by the grace of God and with hard work,” the Vice-President pointed out.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Emmanuel Sin-Nyet Asigri, encouraged the youth to take advantage of every opportunity to develop their skills as the surest way towards a brighter future.

The NYA, he said, would be rolling out a month’s voluntary youth camp project that would seek to encourage volunteerism.
