Six dead as galamsey pit caves in

Six bodies have been retrieved after an abandoned galamsey pit caved in at Mansa Wasa in the Western Region.

All six suspected illegal miners have been confirmed dead upon a rescue operation conducted by NADMO.

The incident occurred Thursday after the suspected illegal miners attempted to derive gold deposits from the pit.

NADMO has confirmed the deaths.

Western Region NADMO coordination Abdul Mohammed Ganiu said “we had the information of a pit that caved in yesterday from the hours of 10 am to 1 am. Those on the side knew very well that they were doing illegal business, they quickly found their way to pick up excavators to rescue the people but after they did that, the people were already dead.”

He noted that the incident had however not been officially reported to the police, because other individuals involved are evading arrest.

He said that education has been ongoing to prevent people from getting into the abandoned pits.
