Protesters hit online with #FixTheCountry demo

#FixTheCountry protesters have hit various social media platforms demonstrating in a virtual and remote fashion.

Conveners in a Press Statement asked sympathizers to wear black throughout today, Sunday, May 9.

“We are declaring this Sunday [May 9, 2021] as a day to serve our Motherland. Remember to honour Mother Ghana by wearing black to tell her that you will not give up on her,” the conveners said in a statement.

The statement further said, “on each hour between 1 pm and 4 pm, we are inviting everyone including trotro, taxi, and Uber drivers, and okada riders to blow their horns for 1 minute.”

“On each hour between 1 pm and 4 pm, we ask all of you at home, in all your communities to bang on utensils for 1 minute,” the statement added.

According to the release, sympathizers could choose “to stand alone anywhere, including at vantage points in your community holding placards or signs with the hashtags.”

“Please be assured that the May 9th protest has not been planned as a one-off event,” the statement added.

Lawyers for the convenors had filed an application at the Supreme Court seeking to set aside what they describe as “defective order” made by a High Court Judge in granting the police a restraining order against their May 9 protest.

The prohibiting order granted by Justice Ruby Aryeetey, prevents the group from proceeding with the march on the said day or any other date until the restriction on public gathering is lifted.

However, the apex court has fixed the date for hearing on June 8, 2021.

Following the SC’s hearing scheduled for June involving their protest, convenors of #FixTheCountry protest have served notice to file an application for an abridgment of time at the Supreme court.

But pending the decision for an abridgment of time at the Supreme court, organisers have tweaked the protest in a new format to hit hard on online platforms today[May 9].
