No more free water effective July 1 – Ministry

Ghanaians will start paying for the water they consume effective July 1, 2021, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources.

The Government of Ghana absorbed the water bills of all Ghanaians following the outbreak of the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.

But the Covid-19 pandemic free water intervention by government ends on 30th June 2021, the release said.

“The general public is to take note. Let us conserve treated water as well as protect and preserve our water bodies,” said the Press Statement.

The Free Water intervention, which had initially been announced to span a period of 3 months from 1st April to 31st June 2020, was extended on two separate occasions in the year 2020 from 1st July to 30th September 2020 and from 1st October to 31st December 2020.

In January 2021, the policy was maintained for lifeline consumers, especially those who consume less than 5m (1,100 gallons) of water per month, from January to 31st March 2021, and further extended from 1st April to 30th June 2021.
