The Chief and residents of Botantia, a fast developing community in the Afigya Kwabre South district in the Ashanti Region have appealed to the government to move quickly to fix a damaged bridge to allow for free movement of people and goods from the area.
Safety concerns had stopped drivers from using the bridge built over the Anyinasu River for the past four months.
This has brought huge discomfort not only to the people in the town and the adjoining communities of Kronum- Aboahia.
Speaking to OTECNEWS’ reporter Agya Sam in an interview, the Chief of the town Nana Adu Asamoah they are cut off from the district business center during the rainy season and the absence of a health center in the area is negatively affecting quality healthcare delivery, hence their call.
“If someone is sick or pregnant, there is no means to take us to the hospital early. Because of this, the person can die or lose the baby. So, we want the government to come to our aid,” Nana Adu Asamoah a.k.a Nana Adumata stated
He added that “if rain comes, some people cannot cross to go to the market. Pregnant women are compelled to deliver home and so we want government to fix the bridge and a health center for us.”
“The collapsed bridge has affected teaching and learning. When it rains both pupils and teachers absent themselves and we send a report to the district office indicating why we can’t go to school. As a result, some parents have withdrawn the wards from the school, reducing our enrolment.
According to him all efforts to get the bridge fixed by either the Urban or Feed Roads department in Kumasi have not been successful.”
He said, the collapse of the Anyinasu bridge has forced travelers to Aboahia to take a long expensive route s. Travelers who cannot afford to pay the high cost of transport continue to risk their life by crossing the broken bridge on foot.
Nana Adu Asamoah, a.k.a Nana Adumata, has gained popularity among his subjects over significant hundreds of thousands of Ghana Cedis street road projects he is embarking but the broken bridge makes the project incomplete.
Many travelers who are risking and crossing through the broken bridge every day are urging government to fix the broken bridge to save travelers from paying high cost of transport and also facilitate free vehicular movement.
