Active Minds Reading Club in collaboration with Believe in What You Dream have hosted over two hundred girls from various schools in Apirede in Akuapem on Friday, 23rd December 2022 to a day of mentoring, reading sessions and creative activities.
The program is to empower the girl child through reading and to teach them essential life skills which will enable them to navigate life with the needed support and empowerment.
The founder of Active Minds Reading Club, Mrs. Rita Agyen Takyi, mentioned that Active Minds Reading Club is on a quest to ensure that every child in Ghana and Africa reads, writes and owns a book.
Mrs. Agyen Takyi said that most children in deprived communities are exposed to social vices due to lack of healthy alternative extracurricular activities.
“Active Minds Reading Club has within the period it was operated been to some deprived communities in Ghana to engage the children in reading sessions and expose them to a world of possibilities and inculcate in them a love of reading.”
She indicated that these children have never owned any books of their own before, and it is a joy to be able to leave them with books they can use at later times. “They are also introduced to mentors who guide them through their literacy journey. We also engage parents through the “Get mummy involved campaign” to get them to push every child of theirs to attend school as well as allow them to do some reading when they get home from school.”
The Executive Director of Believe in What You Dream, Shantelle Brumfield mentioned that her organization is focused on impacting the lives of 100,000 girls by 2025, and in order to do that with excellence, they align with organizations that have similar missions and that’s why she was glad to be collaborating with Active Minds Reading Club to host this program.
Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, Sports Journalist and the Founder of Books and Boots mentioned that
“Sports has been one of the most important socio-cultural learning experiences for boys and men for many years. It is the belief of Books and Boots that those same benefits should be afforded our girls. It is important for all of us to know that, the statistics clearly show that High school girls who partake in sports are less likely to be involved in unintended pregnancies , more likely to get better grades in school and more likely to graduate than girls who do not get actively involved in sports. We are committed to supporting Active Minds Reading Club in empowering girls through education, sports and creative activities.”
