In a bold move, the youth of Aboabo, a farming community in the Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai Municipality, have issued a stern warning to the government, threatening a massive protest over attempted illegal mining activities in the local forest reserve. The community’s patience has worn thin, and they demand immediate action to protect their natural resources.
The youth say that today marks the second time excavators and equipment have entered the community in an attempt to access the reserve. They claim to have information that top-ranking political leaders within the region and beyond are involved in the illegal mining activities, calling on the perpetrators to rescind their decision or face their wrath.
The Aboabo Forest Reserve, a lush haven spanning over 10,000 acres, has been under siege from illegal miners despite repeated warnings and community protests. Fueled by greed and corruption, the mining activities continue. Determined to safeguard their heritage, the youth have had enough.
Leaders of the Aboabo youth stated that they received calls prior to their attempt to block the illegal miners, adding that they will not tolerate the lawless behavior of the perpetrators.
“We fear for our lives because some of these wrongdoers are threatening us, but we won’t give up. We are aware that influential individuals are behind this. We are sounding this caution to them to back down or face our resistance,” he stated.
In a more damning revelation, the youth said the authorities in the assembly have turned deaf ears to their numerous calls to stop the Illegal miners from invading the forest reserve.
“We have served several notices to the authorities, with none of them bearing fruits. We know they have deliberately turned deaf ears to our calls but we won’t give up and will resist them with all our strength till our demands are met ”,they emphasized.
