A top official suspended from his role in South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC) party has taken President Cyril Ramaphosa to court, ratcheting up an internal power struggle.

The ANC’s Secretary General, Ace Magashule, has asked the court to declare the party’s new “step aside” rule unconstitutional.

He was suspended last week as a result of the instruction whereby ANC members charged with corruption must vacate their posts within 30 days.

Mr Magashule denies involvement in a multi-million dollar scandal.

Mr Ramaphosa has vowed to root out deep and long-running corruption in the party.
