Africa’s Future: Empowering Youth and Women, Achieving Financial Independence – John Mahama

President John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the need for Africa to empower its youth and women, as well as achieve financial independence, in order to drive success on the continent.

Speaking at a recent high-level retreat on African Union Institutional Reforms in Nairobi, Mahama noted that with over 60% of Africa’s population under the age of 25, the continent’s future lies in the hands of its young people.

He stressed the importance of institutionalizing frameworks that enable youth and women to lead at all levels of governance, and amplifying their voices in the policymaking process to reflect the diverse needs of society.

Mahama also highlighted the recent election of Ghana’s first female vice president as a promising step towards inclusive leadership, and reaffirmed his commitment to this cause. Furthermore, he emphasized the need for the African Union to achieve financial autonomy, citing the Kigali Decision on Financing the Union as a key step towards reducing dependence on external funding and promoting accountability, transparency, and real change for African people.

Mahama expressed his appreciation for Kenyan President William Ruto’s hosting of the high-level retreat and his leadership in the process of institutional reform within the African Union.
