Akufo-Addo speaks on voters’ registration exercise today

The President of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo will today speak to issues surrounding the new voters’ register

Since the Electoral Commission announced its intentions to compile a new voters register, the opposition NDC and other political parties have kicked against it and have organised several demonstrations and press conferences to fight against it.

After the above efforts failed, the NDC and other private citizens sued the electoral Commission to help stop the compilation of a new voters register and also to force the electoral commission to accept the usage of the old voters ID card in case there is a registration.

However, the NDC lost the case as the supreme court gave the electoral Commission the green light to compile new voters’ register and also not accept the old voters ID card and the birth certificate as a form of identification during the process.

This weekend, there were reports of troops been deployed to a border town in the Volta region; a move which has been condemned by many as a means to put fear in the people to prevent them from registering for the exercise.

The President of Ghana will today address the various controversies surrounding the compilation of the voters’ register.

The Director of Communications at the Presidency Eugene Arhin who made this known in a post on Facebook said: “The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, will on Monday address the nation, ahead of the commencement of Tuesday’s voter registration exercise”.

He, however, indicated that “the time for the address will be communicated in the course of the day”.
