Akufo Addo’s National Honours And Awards Ceremony: A Tone-Deaf Celebration Amidst Economic Hardship And Corruption Under NPP’s Administration

President Akufo-Addo’s decision to organize the National Honours and Awards Ceremony, despite the NPP’s recent election loss, has raised eyebrows across the nation. The ceremony, held on December 30, 2024, aimed to celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to Ghana’s progress. However, many argue that this move is tone-deaf, given the economic hardship and corruption that characterized Akufo-Addo’s administration.

The ceremony honored 80 individuals and 8 institutions for their outstanding contributions to Ghana’s development. Notable recipients included Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ambassador Mercy Yvonne Debra Karikari, and the Honourable Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu. While these individuals may have made significant contributions, many Ghanaians feel that the ceremony is a distraction from the real issues facing the country.

It’s essential to remind Akufo-Addo that Ghanaians voted the NPP out of power due to corruption, hardship, and lawlessness. The administration’s failure to address these issues has driven the country into a ditch. Rather than celebrating individual achievements, the focus should be on addressing the systemic problems that have hindered Ghana’s progress.

The economic hardship, in particular, has been a significant burden on Ghanaians. The administration’s mismanagement of the economy has led to skyrocketing inflation, a depreciating currency, and widespread unemployment. Many families have struggled to make ends meet, and the ceremony’s opulence only serves as a painful reminder of the administration’s priorities.

Furthermore, the corruption that has plagued the administration has eroded trust in government and institutions. The lack of accountability and transparency has allowed corruption to flourish, and many Ghanaians feel that the ceremony is an attempt to reward loyalty rather than excellence.

In his speech, Akufo-Addo emphasized the importance of collective national pride and cultural identity. However, many argue that this rhetoric rings hollow, given the administration’s track record. The administration’s actions have often been at odds with the values of national pride and cultural identity.

Folks as we look to the political future, it’s crucial to prioritize meaningful change over symbolic gestures. I believe the incoming John mahama’s administration ought to endeavor to address the systemic problems that have hindered Ghana’s progress, including corruption, economic hardship, and lawlessness. Only then can Ghanaians truly celebrate progress and excellence cux Akufo Addo is Bomb!!!
