Armed Police Personnel have been deployed to Kwahu Praso in the Kwahu West District of the Eastern Region after rampaging youth in the community and its surrounding villages besieged a Mining Company setting ablaze equipment worth millions of Ghana cedis.
The rampaging youth set fire into two Tata Hitachi excavators ,water pumping machines and other mining equipments.
Their action is in protest against mining in the community.
Kasapa News has gathered that, residents in Kwahu Praso and Asante Akyem Praso have been agitating against exploration of gold in the communities by the company accusing it of being illegal mining firm own by Chinese.
According to the Assembly member for Atuobikrom Electoral Area, Anim Boateng ,a stakeholders forum organized by the Company some weeks ago ended inconclusive as residents unanimously rejected mining in the area.
However, to their dismay,the company started carting mining equipments to the community to commence mining excavating large acres of farmlands.
On April 9,2020 the youth attacked the company which Armed Police with support of the six Assembly members in the area helped to evacuated workers of the mining company including two chinese nationals amid road block and gunshot by the angry youth.
The agitations continued Friday April 10,2020 at about 1:00pm when the youth of Kwahu Praso and its surrounding villages went to the mining site of the Company’s at Kwahu Praso and set fire into the mining equipments.
According to the Public Relations Officer of the Eastern Regional Police Commander,DSP Ebenezer Tetteh, Kwahu South District Security Council( DISEC) led by the District Chief Executive, Samuel Atta Ofori Jnr, the Nkkawkaw Divisional Commander ACP Charles Kofi Adu, Superintendent Victor Kwakye, Nkawkaw District Commander, Superintendent Richard Kofi Hornuvor, Mpraeso District Commander, DSP Samuel Akoto Baidoo, Nkawkaw Divisional Operation Commander, ASP Samuel Opoku Korang, Nkawkaw District Crime Officer and representative of BNI stormed the community in the Company of Armed Police personnel to restore law and order through engagement with the Chiefs and six Assembly Members in the Area.
He said, armed Police Personnel have since been deployed to the community to patrol the area.
Kasapa News has gathered that,one of the Assembly Members has been arrested for inciting the youth.
