Asante Akyem North Assembly buys free cashew seedlings at ghc 125K – Assembly member Alleges

 

The Assembly member for Agogo Obuase Gyedim in the Ashati Region Hon Enock Sarfo Has alleged that, the Assembly has paid for unspecified quantity of free cashew seedlings given to them by the Former District Chief Executive officer for Bosome Freho Hon Yaw Danso at a price of Ghc 125,000.00 with the MP’s common fund.

Speaking on Oyerepa FM’s evening news on Thursday, April 13th , 2023. He said, he inform some followers of the MP for the constituency Hon Andy Appiah Kubi that, there are free cashew seedlings at the Bosome Freho District.

According to the Gyedim Assembly representative, subsequently, the MP and his followers went for the free seedlings and gave to farmers of the district but his checks has it that, the Assembly has paid for the free seedlings at a fee of Ghc 125,000.00 from the MP’s common fund.

My Sarfo explained that, the former MCE revealed that, the people of his District were more interested in Cocoa that is why the cashew seedlings were given to Asante Akyem North District.

Enquiring from him, wether he has evidence to his claim, he could not substantiate his allegations with any particulars of prove..

Speaking to the Municipal chief Executive , Hon Oti Boateng, he said, as at the time he was speaking to Oyerepa FM’s Kwaku Ansah on phone, he could not confirmed with documents wether the Assembly indeed paid for the seedlings or were dash out freely to the farmers.

Meanwhile, the MCE conceded of personally accessing some of the seedlings from the former DCE of Bosome Freho Hon Yaw Danso on free of charge but only paid for the transportation of the seedlings.

*Background*

The planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) program is one of the government flagship program aimed at diversifying the country’s Agricultural export capacity to include other tree crops with equal economic values as cocoa.

The program has targeted six (6) crops aside Cocoa. The crops are coconut, rubber, cashew, oil palm, coffee and shea. The Planting for Export and Rural Development (PERD) program was launched by the Government in 2020.

To execute the implementation of the project all Metropolitan Municipal District Assemblies were directed to select one of the crops and support farmers with seedlings certified improved seedlings, extension services, business support and regulatory mechanisms.
