Asante Kotoko coach endorses the idea of resuming football without fans – Maxwell Konadu

Head Coach of Kumasi Asante Kotoko, Maxwell Konadu has endorsed the idea of resuming playing of football without fans saying ‘it is the best’ and less risky.

The Ghana FA took a decision to suspend football activities in the country at a time when government had imposed restrictions on public/social gatherings as a measure to contain the spread of the Novel Corona Virus.

The suspension has been in effect since middle of March this year as plans continue on how best to re-activate the game in the future. The GFA has set a deadline of June 30 to decide on the fate of the suspended football season.

As many clamour for a resumption of the game, there have been suggestions of playing without fans a practise that has taken effect in Europe.

With many shooting down such a suggestion describing it as alien to the local football culture, Maxwell Konadu has backed it suggesting that it’s best safe to take that option.

The Asante Kotoko gaffer told Happy FM in an interview “If we will continue the season, then we can start without spectators. We cannot allow all of us to throng to the stadium if we start now.

“If we start with the empty stadium it will help so that we don’t spread the virus. We have no choice, that’s how things have become or we might as well stay home. We cannot risk lives.

“So if we will resume playing, then its best we play without fans. We cannot take risks at all,” he acknowledged.

Government is expected to communicate the next line of action on easing of imposed restrictions by July 31. It is widely believed that decisions taken will allow for football to restart.
