Asokwa Municipal Assembly fails to elect presiding member

Members of the Asokwa Municipal Assembly have failed to elect a presiding member after two rounds of voting on Thursday.

None of the two contestants, Oscar Riches of Old Asokwa Electoral area and Bismark Osei Tutu of Kyirapatre, secured the mandatory two-thirds of the total 18 votes cast, to emerge the winner.

The first round of voting saw the two securing nine votes each, taking the voting process into a second-round which ended with Oscar Riches polling 10 votes and eight votes for Osei Tutu.

The Assembly will meet in the next 10 days to vote again.

Municipal Chief Executive for Asokwa, Akwanuasa Gyimah, described the turn out as unfortunate.

“It is quite unfortunate we were not able to elect a presiding member to enable us have the full complement of the Assembly to kick-start our programmes for the year,” he said.

Mr Gyimah is optimistic a presiding member would be elected when the Assembly meets in the next 10 days.

Meanwhile, the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu who inaugurated the new Assembly on behalf of the president urged the Assembly to increase its internally generated funds to embark on development projects without waiting for funds from the government.
