In a significant development, Attorney General Dominic Akuritinga Ayine has officially withdrawn all charges against former Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Johnson Asiama. This decision marks a dramatic turn in the high-profile case, which had been ongoing since 2020.
Asiama had been accused of involvement in the collapse of UniBank and UT Bank, facing charges including fraudulent breach of trust, money laundering, conspiracy to commit crime, and violations of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) Act.
Asiama was not alone in facing these charges; several others had also been implicated. However, with the Attorney General’s decision, all charges against Asiama have been dropped, bringing an end to the protracted legal battle that began in December 2019. This development is likely to have far-reaching implications, not only for Asiama but also for the broader financial sector in Ghana.
In a related development, the government has also withdrawn all criminal charges against two prominent figures from the National Democratic Congress (NDC): former National Chairman Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo and Communications Officer Anthony Kwaku Boahen. This move signals a significant shift in the government’s approach to these cases, and it remains to be seen how these developments will impact the country’s political and financial landscape.
