[AUDIO]: Why police officers still take bribe; IGP’s take

Inspector-General of Police (IGP), James Oppong-Boanuh, has given a diagnosis of the growing police unprofessional conduct on the road including the acceptance of bribes.

He explained that civilians, especially drivers, who break the law willingly offer the bribe to avoid being prosecuted.

Such unholy enticement, the IGP said makes it very difficult for police personnel to uphold their professional standards.

Mr Oppong-Boanuh said if offenders stop giving bribes, the police will also stop taking it.

“If we all decide not to pay bribes and agree to go to court, no police officer can force his hand into your pocket,” he said on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme, Tuesday.

The IGP also announced special toll-free numbers including 191 or 18555 to serve as a platform for individuals to send videos, pictures or any form of evidence, showing police misconduct.

Mr Oppong-Boanuh added that police officers found guilty of engaging in unscrupulous behaviour by virtue of any message sent to the announced numbers, will be dealt with expeditiously.
