BE VIGILANT WITH FIRE DURING HARMATTAN SEASON – GNFS WARNS PUBLIC

The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has called on the General public to be careful with materials that can easily ignite fire to reduce the incidence of fire outbreaks.

According to GNFS, there is a need to protect lives and property during the dry or harmattan season.

Speaking in an interview with journalist in the Greater Accra Region, a communication member from the PR department of the GNFS, ADO1 Alex King Nartey advised the citizenry to take fire precautions seriously in their homes, workplaces and market places to avoid any unforeseen incidents.

King Nartey entreated the public to be mindful of cooking equipment like gas cylinders, coal pots, electric cookers among other things in the harmattan period.

Mr. Alex King Nartey said “my advice to the general public is that we are now setting in the dry season and everything will become dry very soon, therefore I will advise the citizenry to be very careful with the use of fire especially those who use gas and coal pots to cook their food as well as those who use fire for their social activities.

He added that offenders of the wrong use of fire within the period will be arrested and prosecuted to serve as a deterrent to others.

He said an effective collaboration between the public, especially market women will also help to drastically reduce fire cases.

Alex King Nartey lamented that the service is in need of safety logistics to make their work easier.

The fire officer disclosed that they are severely under-resourced.

ADO1 Alex King Nartey further disclosed that the majority of tankers they use in fighting fire in the country are not fit for purpose and firemen are doing their best to protect live and properties from outbreaks.

The officer is appealing to the government and stakeholders to purchase for the service the needed logistics to make their work more efficient.
