The Bono East Regional Health Directorate has held a stakeholders’ engagement with key partners including the media, food vendors, and the Environmental Health Department, as part of efforts to raise awareness and prevent cholera outbreaks in the region.
The meeting, held earlier today, May 13, 2025, at the conference room of the Bono East Regional Health Directorate, focused on collaborative strategies to strengthen public education on cholera, especially in light of emerging trends linked to climate change. Traditionally associated with the rainy season, cholera is now increasingly being reported during the harmattan period in several parts of the country, including the Western, Greater Accra, Central, and Ashanti Regions.
A key recommendation from the meeting was for the Regional Health Directorate to establish a database of media houses across the region, as stakeholders believe this would enhance regular collaboration with the media to disseminate timely and accurate health information to the public.
A representative from the Bono East Regional Environmental Health Officer Department, Mr. Lamptey, disclosed that as part of their preparedness plan to prevent a cholera outbreak in the region, they will engage in public education on behavioral change and implement a School Led Total Sanitation Program.
Speaking to journalists after the session, the Bono East Regional Health Promotion Officer, Mr. Ruben Appiah, highlighted the importance of such engagements in preventing future outbreaks.
He disclosed that the meeting was highly productive, with participants gaining valuable insights into effective awareness strategies. Several questions raised during the discussion were answered, and others will be forwarded to management for further consideration.
“We are all aware that cholera outbreaks are typically recorded during the rainy season. However, due to climate change, cholera cases are now being reported even during the harmattan season in regions such as Western, Greater Accra, Central, and parts of the Ashanti Region,” he stated.
“Today’s stakeholders meeting, which included the media, Environmental Health Department, food vendors, and others, focused on discussing ways we can work together to raise awareness about cholera and prevent outbreaks.”
“We had a fruitful discussion and gained valuable insights on how best to create effective awareness for cholera prevention. Many of the questions raised during the session were answered, and others will be forwarded to management for further consideration.” He stated
Mr. Ruben Appiah further appealed to all stakeholders, especially media professionals, to play an active role in educating the public on proper hygiene practices and the dangers associated with cholera.
“I encourage all participants, especially the media, to assist us in educating the public on the importance of cholera prevention in the Bono East Region, as well as the dangers associated with cholera outbreaks.” He said.
The Bono East Regional Health Directorate says it will continue to engage communities, stakeholders, and institutions in the region to ensure coordinated efforts toward the elimination of cholera as a public health threat.
