Bringing down Kwesi Nyantakyi brought down Ghana football – Bagbin

Ghana’s Speaker of Parliament, Mr Alban Bagbin, has said the corruption exposé that ended the football administration career of former Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kwesi Nyantakyi, did a lot of harm to the country’s football.

“When we were able to bring down Kwesi Nyantakyi, we also brought down Ghana football”, Mr Bagbin told the parliamentary press corps on Monday, 4 April 2022, adding: “That is one of the brightest spots at FIFA”.

According to him, some FIFA executives were amazed at the turn of events with Mr Nyantakyi, who was caught on a secretly-recorded video by investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tiger Eye PI taking $65,000 in cash as a bribe.

The 2018 exposé led to Mr Nyantakyi’s exit from the GFA as well as CAF and FIFA.

“When I met the executives of FIFA, they said, ‘What happened? Why did you people do that [because] he [Nyantakyi] was a dynamic addition?’”

“The value that he carried at their meetings, he was highly respected and very influential, and Ghana football was up there”, Mr Bagbin said.

“We thought we were only handling Nyantakyi. We didn’t know we were handling the whole of Ghana,” the Speaker bemoaned.

In his view, journalists can “criticise us; correct your children but don’t break their hands or their legs”, warning: “It will affect you”.

“And that is where we are now, and people are calling on the government to forgive Nyantakyi and bring him back to assist.”
