Burundi’s first lady flown to Kenya after testing positive for coronavirus – Kenyan media

Burundi’s first lady has reportedly been airlifted to Kenya after contracting COVID-19, Kenyan media report.

Citizen TV reports that Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza arrived in Nairobi on Thursday and was immediately admitted at the Aga Khan University Hospital, one of the COVID-19 treatment facilities in the country.

The 50-year-old was accompanied by three bodyguards, one of whom also tested positive.

Burundi’s presidency is yet to issue any statement on the first lady’s condition.

The East African nation of about 11 million people has reported 42 cases of COVID-19 and one death.

Unlike many countries globally, Burundi did not impose any movement restrictions in the country in efforts to curb the spread of the disease.

The country last week held its general elections in search for a new president to replace Pierre Nkurunziza.

The ruling party’s Evariste Ndayishimiye was declared the winner of Burundi’s presidential election with 69% of the vote.

The 52-year-old beat seven candidates including the main opposition competitor Agathon Rwasa, who managed got 24% of the vote, according to the election commission.
