7 mining companies dragged to court for ‘mining illegally’

Seven mining companies, the Attorney General and Minerals Commission have been hauled to court over alleged illegalities.

The plaintiff, David Addo has commissioned the actions in his capacity as a Ghanaian.

Mr Addo claims AngloGold Gold Ashanti Iduapriem Ltd, Newmont Ghana Ltd, AngloGold Ashanti Ghana Ltd, Newmont Ghana Gold Ltd, Golden Start (Bogoso) Ltd, Asanko Gold GH Ltd and Ghana bauxite Ltd are all engaged in mining illegally in Ghana.

According to him, the agreement with the mining companies has not been approved by Parliament as required by law.

In his suit, Mr Addo asked the High Court to back his claim that the companies are mining illegally in Ghana.

He has also asked for a full audit into the activities of the companies as well as be made to pay back returns from their operations.

Further, he is seeking a lasting order against the companies from engaging in any mining activity in the country.
