Controversy over Otumfour’s statue: It represents true image of Asantehene- Suame MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Suame Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti region, Hon. Dr. John Osei Bobie, has explained that the statue erected at the Kumasi Kejetia Market represents the true image of Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, depending on the angle one views from, as criticized by the public.

He said if one wants to observe the statue well, the person should observe it from different angles to get the true view of the statue, rather than basing on one-angle-view and conclude that it does not represent the true image of the King of Ashanti.

The Suame MCE, who supervised the project, gave the explanations on Otec FM’s morning shows, ‘Nyasapo’ on Monday, May 6, 2019, hosted by Captain Koda.

His explanation came in the mist of concerns raised by the public for the pulling down of the statue, for a poor work done, and wants the Manhyia Palace to summon the sculptor and force him to pull down the statue and put up a more befitting one.

They said the statue does not represent the true image of their king who has reigned for twenty years and has spoilt the beauty of the multi-million funded Kejetia Redevelopment Project.

The statue was unveiled by President Nana Akufo-Addo and Otumfuo Osei Tutu II on Thursday, 2 May 2019, during sod cutting ceremony for the commencement of the 2nd Phase of the Kumasi Kejetia Redevelopment Project.

It was erected by the Sculpture Department of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), to honor the Asantehene, their Chancellor, as part of the 20th celebration of the ascension of Asantehene to the Golden Stool.

“When you look at statue from afar, you will get a different view, as well as getting a different view when one looks standing at the feet of it. I don’t blame them because they ‘beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder’. As time goes on, people will come to terms with further and better comments after viewing it from different angles,” he said.

He said the 19 feet statue was approved by some members of the Kumasi Traditional Council (KTC), during and before erecting it at the newly redevelopment Kumasi Kejetia Market, and “we have been commended by some high powered persons for a good work done”.
