My husband’s arrest is intimidation – Dr Agordzor’s wife slams

Wife of the senior police officer who has been picked up over his alleged involvement in a coup plot has criticised her husband’s arrest and detention, calling it an act of intimidation.

Patience Agordzor said it does not make sense that Dr Benjamin Agordzor is being held for over 24 hours for his comments on the instant messaging platform, WhatsApp.

“I see it as a kind of intimidation. That is the way I look at it. Because I don’t see how they can stand on WhatsApp messages and start persecuting somebody. You keep the person in custody [but] everybody that was invited concerning that WhatsApp messages have all been discharged,” she told Joy News Tuesday after meeting her husband briefly at the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI).

ACP Dr Agordzor has been charged with abetment to commit treason for his alleged involvement in the coup plot.

He has been held in BNI custody since 1 p.m. on Monday.

He is set to face the court on Wednesday on the charges slapped on him.

Dr Agordzor’s lawyer, Martin Kpebu, believes a famous presentation his client made at the Institute for Democratic Governance (IDEG) where he bemoaned the political interference in the Police Service, may have scraped some influential nerves.

Dr Agordzor’s wife told Joy News that after waiting for over ten hours before being allowed to see her husband, she was relieved.

“I have seen him, I have spoken to him. And I think it is a better way of relieving myself than waiting…He said God is in control so I should just be calm. We are trusting that the truth will come out and he will be released anytime soon,” she is hopeful.

‘High profile’ arrests

Some six serving military officers have also been picked up by police in connection with the alleged plot to take down the Presidency and destabilise the country.

Lance Corporal Ali Solomon, Seidu Abubakar, Albert Baba Ibrahim, Godwin Nii Ankrah, Sylvester Kpebu, and a lady identified only as WO2 Esther have been charged with possession of explosives, arms and ammunition without lawful authority.

They have since been put before the Kaneshie District Court.

A senior military officer and a civilian, who the government said were also part of the “elaborate plot” to subvert the state, have also been slapped with similar charges.

The senior military officer, Colonel Samuel Kojo Gameli and the civilian employee of the Ghana Armed Forces, Gershon Akpa,  were charged on Friday, September 27.

This brings to eight the total number of persons picked up in connection with the offence.
