Calls for suspension of 2020 elections premature – Majority Leader

The Minister for Parliamentary Affairs and Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has rejected calls for the December 7 general elections to be suspended in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak in the country.

The experienced Legislator said it is too early and over-exaggerated to have such a conversation.

Some political actors like the ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako have called for this year’s elections to be put on hold.

Political Science Lecturer, Prof. Ransford Gyampo in a Facebook post also called for full risk assessment on the implications of conducting the general elections.

But Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu believes it’s too early to talk about the suspension of this year’s election.

“My considered opinion is that it is too early in the day to call for any such thing. It is about five weeks since we’ve had this affliction and we’ve woken up to it and we’re doing our best to confront it. Let’s see how it plays out. But in my opinion, it is too early to call for the suspension of the elections.”

“The NPP’s primaries is even hovering around if it is possible to hold the NPP primaries it should be able to hold the general elections. Let’s see how it plays out, I wouldn’t want at this stage of our national life to say we should suspend the national elections. It is premature, let’s see how events play out,” he told Joy FM.
