A political analyst, Jackson Ojo has said that should the US Court indicts President Bola Tinubu may cause problems in the country.
The camp of the former vice-president believes President Tinubu’s academic records from primary school to university remained questionable, notably his Chicago State University certificate.
It would be recalled that on July 11, Atiku Abubakar, 2023 presidential candidate under the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, filed a petition seeking to obtain more information about Tinubu’s academic records at Chicago State University.
The documents sought after includes, Tinubu’s admission and acceptance at the university and dates of attendance, including degrees, awards, and honours he obtained while studying at the American varsity.
President Tinubu on his part filed a motion to quash the subpoena before the Circuit Court of Cook County, Illinois, Chicago, USA, against a fresh petition by Atiku.
This comes following the petition to the Tribunal to challenge President Tinubu’s victory in the 2023 presidential election.
Reacting to this move, a political analyst noted that Nigeria is a sovereign state and doubts the US court ruling on Tinubu’s case would affect the tribunal’s judgement.
In an interview with The Punch, Ojo stated that Atiku’s attempt may prove futile.
He said:
“I don’t know if the ruling of an American court can be binding on Nigeria. We are a sovereign nation. Being a member of the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, the United Nations, and many others does not mean that Nigerian laws are subjugated to international laws or that our courts are inferior to theirs.
“If President Tinubu is indicted in the US court, there may be a problem, but whether that will influence the position of the tribunal and the courts here is another thing entirely.”
