Chief calls on gov’t to lease Lands for small-scale mining
Sompahene of Nkaseim Traditional Area in the Asutifi South District of the Ahafo Region, Nana Yaw Sarpong has called on the government and stakeholders in Ahafo to lease concessions for small-scale mining.
He said the move will help create jobs for the youth in the communities whose livelihood depend on mining.
The government in March 2017 imposed a ban on small-scale mining following the destruction of major water bodies and forest reserves across the country.
Nana Yaw Sarpong appealed to the government to intervene by releasing some parts of lands that have been given to Newmont Ahafo Mines for community mining.
Nana Sarpong added that he acquired knowledge from the University of Mines and Technology in Tarkwa which he is ready to implement fully if the government leases lands for small scale mining
According to him, measures have been put in place reclaim mining lands by planting economic trees.
At the site, the earth works and the planting of economic trees had been completed on a ten acre degraded land.
