Child among 5 people killed in fiery car crash

Five people, including a child, were killed in a fiery car crash in Mpumalanga on Sunday evening.

Three others were injured.

The accident took place when a Volkswagen Golf and a Nissan sedan collided on the R23 between Standerton and Val.

Both vehicles burst into flames on impact.

According to Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison spokesperson Moeti Mmusi, both male drivers, two female passengers, and a child were killed.

Mmusi said:

One person was seriously injured, and two others escaped with minor injuries. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital in Standerton.

The cause of the crash is still unknown, however, Mmusi said the contravention of road rules may have been a cause.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security, and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe pleaded with motorists to follow the rules.

He urged motorists to reduce speed during wet weather.

“Let us be cautious on the road and prioritise our own and other people’s safety,” Shongwe said.

“By obeying the rules and adjusting our driving to the various road conditions, we can all help to put an end to carnage on our roads.”
