CK Akonnor told to accept pay-cut before his salary is paid

Head coach of the Ghana national football team, CK Akonnor, has been told he must take a pay-cut before his salary is paid.

According to the Minister of Youth and Sports, the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic has forced his office to insist on the salary slash from the former Ghana captain.

Akonnor took charge of the Black Stars in January 2020 on a $25,000 monthly salary but 9 months on, he has yet to be paid any money for his services.

The former Asante Kotoko gaffer has yet to supervise his first game for the Black Stars since replacing Kwesi Appiah, with the outbreak of COVID-19 delaying his start to work.

“I have told the Coach to accept a salary cut in the COVID-19 period before we pay him, we cannot give him full salary in the COVID-19 era, and we are waiting for a response from the FA” The minister told Asempa FM.

The minister maintains the coach has agreed in principle to accept the salary cut, but its left with the Ghana FA to determine the percentage to be slashed

“The coach has agreed in Principle to accept a salary cut in this COVID-19 era, its left with the FA to come out with the modalities for us to pay him” he added

Hon. Isaac Asiamah stressed that most workers are accepting pay cut in the COVID-19 era, and it is incumbent on the Black Stars coach to also accept same.

He assured the coach will be paid all outstanding salaries once the FA concludes talks with the coach.
