December 7 elections: Suhuyini describes Mahama comments as ‘refined’ and ‘responsible’

National Democratic Congress (NDC), Member of Parliament for Tamale North Constituency, Alhassan Sayibu Suhuyini says former President John Dramani Mahama’s comments on the upcoming elections as regards not accepting the results if flawed are more “refined” and more “responsible” if compared to comments by other opposition leaders in the past.

He said the comments by the immediate past president which have attracted a lot of attention is in sharp contrast to what Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, for instance, said while he was leader of the opposition before 2016.

The NDC MP, therefore, said Mr Mahama should even receive applause for the comments he made.

Alhassan Suhuyini made these suggestions while speaking on The Key Points on TV3/3FM on Saturday, June 13.

His party’s leader, while addressing party supporters at the 28th anniversary ceremony of the NDC on Wednesday, June 10, said the largest opposition party will not accept the results of this year’s elections if they suspect a flaw in the process.

“As leader of the NDC, I wish to serve notice that we shall do all our parts to ensure that our country remains peaceful and that the electoral process proceeds smoothly BUT let nobody assume that we will accept the results of a flawed elections,” he said to cheers from the gathering.

Alhassan Suhuyini said it is important such a point is made by the opposition leader because some persons in authority have assumed that ordinary citizens have become “docile” and “will take anything that they dish to us”.

He alluded to happenings during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election on January 31, 2019, saying most of the culprits cited in the Emile Short Commission have gotten away with their deeds as the results were accepted.

For him, that will not repeat itself and that is what Mr Mahama clearly put out there.

“It is clear that we understand that this is refined, this is as clear as it can get and this is as responsible as you can have if you look at the history of opposition leaders.”

He cited statements like the infamous ‘All Die Be Die’ by current president Akufo-Addo, as those that even attracted international attention, denting the image of Ghana.

He stressed: “If you look at the things that were said before we even went to court, then we should be applauding this opposition leader for the things that he is saying.”
