Former Minister for Education and Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, has secured the fourth position on the ballot paper for the upcoming New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership election, slated for January 31, 2026.

The balloting exercise, held on Friday, October 10, featured five prominent figures within the NPP: Kennedy Agyapong, Bryan Acheampong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyepong, who picked first, second, third, fourth, and fifth positions respectively.

Dr Adutwum’s placement at number four, symbolically associated with balance, structure, and progress has been warmly received by his supporters, who view him as a visionary reformer capable of ushering Ghana into a new era of innovation, educational excellence, and inclusive national development.

Dr Adutwum has long been celebrated as a transformational leader whose life’s work embodies discipline, innovation, and service. From humble beginnings to leading Ghana’s education sector, his journey is a powerful story of commitment to nation-building through education and human capital development.

As Minister for Education, he championed the establishment of 35 STEM Senior High Schools and initiated the creation of five STEM-focused universities, signaling a bold shift toward a 21st-century learning ecosystem. Under his leadership, STEM education was placed at the heart of Ghana’s educational transformation agenda, preparing young Ghanaians to compete globally in science and technology-driven fields.

He was widely admired for his hands-on leadership style, often making unannounced visits to classrooms to engage teachers and students directly. His approach redefined public service as one grounded in visibility, accountability, and empathy.

Dr Adutwum’s strong educational foundation is a reflection of his global exposure and dedication to knowledge. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Land Economy (Business Administration – Real Estate) from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

He further pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching from Chapman University, a Master’s degree in Education Management from the University of La Verne, and later earned a PhD in Educational Policy, Planning, and Administration from the University of Southern California (USC) in the United States.

Before entering full-time politics, he made a lasting mark in the United States as founder and CEO of the New Designs Educational Group (NDEG) in Los Angeles, a network of charter schools focused on raising academic standards and promoting STEM excellence. He also taught mathematics and technology at Manual Arts High School and led the USC Neighborhood Academic Initiative (NAI) program, guiding underserved students toward higher education success.

Returning to Ghana, Dr Adutwum brought with him a wealth of international experience and a renewed sense of purpose. Elected as Member of Parliament for Bosomtwe under the New Patriotic Party (NPP), he quickly distinguished himself as a results-driven public servant.

As Deputy Minister for Education from 2017 to 2021 and later as Minister for Education until 2025, he combined vision with practical leadership, emphasizing innovation, efficiency, and outcomes. His initiatives empowered teachers, modernized school infrastructure, and enhanced access to technical and vocational training.

He also launched scholarship schemes for young students in engineering and medicine, reflecting his deep commitment to nurturing future Ghanaian professionals.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum’s entry into the NPP flagbearership race brings a refreshing sense of hope and renewal. His supporters describe him as a leader of ideas, not slogans, one who believes in measurable change, empowerment through education, and inclusive development across all sectors.

They say his candidacy represents a bridge between technocratic excellence and grassroots leadership, combining global exposure with a grounded understanding of Ghana’s challenges and opportunities.

Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum’s campaign message is expected to center on education, innovation, and integrity a trio of principles that have defined his public life and continue to inspire a new generation of Ghanaians seeking progress and transformation.
